“One person’s craziness is another person’s reality.”-Tim Burton
The oddballs of pop culture
From the pages of manga to the bright lights of Hollywood, oddballs have always found a place in pop culture. Whether as misunderstood outcasts, eccentric geniuses, or rebels who refuse to conform. These characters reflect the very struggles real-life oddballs have faced: rejection, ridiculed, and the fight to be accepted on their own terms. Yet, they also embody the power of being different, proving that the strangest souls often leave the biggest impact. In this installment, we’re diving into the oddballs anime, tv shows, cartoons, movies, and manga. As well as the creators behind them that challenge and defy the normal expectations. And prove that being an outsider is sometimes the greatest strength of all. Whether they’re beloved icons or underrated gems, these characters show us that oddballs don’t just survive in pop culture, but dare to shape it.
Having the same insight from the previous but this installment we’ll be diving into characters that we love and cherish till this day. Have it be popular icons that shaped, what we watch or enjoy to the originality of underrated gems and cult classic gems from they’re era that wasn’t accepting back then as it is today. And me personally I have many underrated gems and classics that hold near and dear to me as most people would never understand what I’m talking about and knowing that they really don’t have that much popularity. But I knew how to grow. And to be okay with that which taught me how to enjoy the authenticity of being more personal and precious to my heart and let me enjoy it in peace. Or just to go back to happy memories that always gave me happy feelings. And I enjoy going back and forth between western and eastern. Because growing up in America I did enjoy the classics that still live in my head rent free and also remember the small things in life that always made me happy or sad. But for now we’re going to stick with the happy side of things. Growing up the shows that always linger in my mind of the western audience was cow and chicken, i am weasel, scooby doo, dexter’s laboratory, samurai jack, ed, edd n eddy, scooby doo zombie island, grim adventure of billy and mandy, etc. My childhood nostalgia always played to those shows as they had an extreme knowledgement how they enjoyed thinking out the norms and knew good humor with storytelling. And slowly but gradually I started learning and leaning more towards the eastern side as toonami and adult swim was starting and introducing new genres that I had never seen before or heard of and when I watched it for the first time. I knew I was hooked. I knew that I enjoyed it more, along with my American cartoons as well.
Even growing up on adult swim and toonami I always enjoy watching home movies and robot chicken. Because those shows did have their own eccentric ways. Like Seth green using stop-motion and doing parodies and having dark humor was an approach that at it time definitely was odd. Or having home movies being the weird quirky slice of life, even with how the animation looked, but it definitely gave that real awkward dry humor approach. And looking back at all these shows definitely was a path into me actually relating and embracing these shows that others wouldn’t.
As i got little bit older and younger my curiosity wanted to adventure out more to the eastern side, as i enjoy watching cartoons during the day and would stay up late past my bedtime just to watch toomani and other shows on adult swim and i was just a happy little kid that was always glued to the screen even though yes not a good idea. And never let kids do this but it’s more on the forbidden side. And I would enjoy staying up late watching The Big-O, Tenchi Muyo! Tenchi universe, Tenchi in Tokyo, outlaw star, crayon shin-chan. Especially since the Tenchi series, along with The Big-O and Outlaw star hold a very much near and dear play in my heart. Because trying to have conversations about those underrated gems never ends well for me. Even though I did grow up with popular shows and animes as well. Mostly for me that i did enjoy was sailor moon and cardcaptor sakura. But the most underrated oddball anime stuck the most to me. And as I also got older as well, manga’s did the same. Like reading vampire hunter d, or Go Nagi series, again my list of things i enjoy reading and watching is definitely an interesting mindset. But I’ll focus more on the topic at hand as coming up and enjoying more what life doesn’t look at the same even though I do enjoy some highly popular anime, shows, and movies but I’ll always enjoy the odd side of things as they catch more attention then most would. Even though some do go under my radar or some don’t live up to the hype. But i’ll always find little gems that fit the correct spot.
Even I still go back to the originals of western shows that still make me laugh. Like the original shows the munsters and the addams family. Although yes I still like the 1991 addams family movie. But the 1964 cult classic originals of the Addams family and the munsters just holds more. Instead of trying to be more edgy like again the 1991 movie and the netflix reboot. It is more on the fact that they can embrace the odd and bizarre side of things while still being cheerful and happy about it. Because everytime the family said or did something it felt more real and more natural. And the jokes are still funny to this day and they didn’t really have to try hard about enjoying the bizarre side of things. Because in the viewer perspective they were happy and comfortable with who they were. Both shows always had smiles on their faces as they found the thunderous and gloomy weather more of a happy enjoyment. Instead of the sunny being yellow and bright. And as we looked more in, they had more of a healthier relationship of a loving family instead of the boring basic ones. And everyone that looked at them with fear as they actually considered them the oddballs as they didn’t let the outside world bother them. Even till this day I still find it funny how Fred Gwynne as Herman always looked in the mirror and it always cracked. He’ll just shrug it off and continue on with his day. Which is the beauty and humor combine all into one. Even though back then they were considered controversial between both shows. Especially with Morticia addams wearing a dress so tightly that made women clutch their pearls tightly. But it’s more of the fact that both shows enjoy being different and thinking outside the box of “normal” because let’s face it, if we didn’t have those two shows paving the way for them we wouldn’t have many authors and creators thinking outside the box like them. Even though they had a brief moment in the spotlight in the old era of hollywood. But it helps us understand and respect it more as they did become the most beloved icons of history.
But there’s definitely more on this list that also shapes and innovates what we watch and enjoy today. Like Tim Burton being on this list again as we all grew up and enjoy many things he created the nightmare before christmas and beetlejuice. Come we all know we can never get tired of singing “This is halloween.” or many of the many delightful songs from beetlejuice. I’m pretty sure someone knows the song by heart. If you do feel free to leave a comment about it. Even I related to nightmare before christmas. I literally treat halloween like christmas but in all honesty halloween holds more entertainment than christmas. Growing up I didn’t really connect much to Christmas even those yes! You receive presents but…halloween has more joy about it especially for me personally i do things more out of my comfort zone than i would for christmas. Like yeah you have christmas movies. But halloween just has a more interesting atmosphere about it that makes you want to have a small little christmas tree and decorate it with halloween decorations. Over just enjoying decorating your house like an insane person for the 31 days of october.
Things like that just makes me enjoy being the eccentric person that I am and I definitely embrace them fully. And another interesting thing of being an oddball is mostly how complete opposites people can be from each other and the two that are complete opposites. Yet they fit into this category so well with beloved authors and creator Junji Ito and Hayao Miyazaki. Being two men in both the western world and eastern world of creating stories and animations that we love today. But these two men have complete opposites of each other of what they create and the counter parts of their personalities.
Miyazaki is known for being very curmudgeonly and critical of modern society, technology, and anime culture, yet creates works of profound beauty and hope. His films most notable “Spirited Away” and “My Neighbor Totoro” reflect his unique worldview where environmental concerns meet magical wonder, his reputation for being difficult or pessimistic contrasts beautifully with the warmth and humanity in his work. And the wonderful mind of junji ito having the same nightmare fuel concepts as Stephen king. Junji Ito presents an almost perfect inverse, he’s frequently described as a cheerful, ordinary person who happens to create some of the most disturbing horror manga ever made. Works like “Uzumaki” and “Tomie” spring from an imagination that seems completely at odds with his pleasant personality. He talks about being fascinated by the grotesque while maintaining a rather conventional personal life.
Having both creators embracing their unique ways of how they create an interesting atmosphere to draw in their audience. Having them being completely opposites of each other and they’re outwards perspective of how they see the world. And use either inspiration or using memories from their lives or people around them. Which adds more fascinating layers of being different and strange because they also showcast of how much people can be solar opposite and don’t always have the same grounded structure and ideas. And another interesting of the two is how much they give yin and yang energy. Have it be their personalities or the intriguing worlds that they create.
These examples show how being an oddball isn’t just about being different for its sake, but most embracing authentic self-expression even when it doesn’t match societal expectations or even one’s outward appearance. They demonstrate what might makes someone “odd.” have it be Miyakaki’s cynicism or ito’s fascination with horror. Can lead to becoming the source of their greatest contributions to art and culture. And yet they also know how to create characters, atmospheres, and a storyline of embracing the oddness of what they live in. for me the one that fully sucks me in when it comes to Hayao Miyazaki (Studio Ghibli) always having profound themes and not afraid to explore concepts behind them that involves: environmentalism, nature and humanity. Making you wonder and think of the similarities of the outside world and what we had to combat or face. And also making us dive more in the concept of humanity, having it be human nature or making us understand what the big picture is really about. Between the films “Spirited away”, “Howl’s moving castle”, “Princess Mononoke”, “Kiki’s Delivery service”, “Grave of the fireflies”, “ponyo”, “Porco Rosso”, to me they really many you think and wonder. And actually have you sit in her mind and actually think. Have it be the cruel harsh understanding of human and war and the destruction of things like the sad case between, “Grave of the fireflies” or “Princess Mononoke” it really have to understand and pick apart the themes that involve humanity. Because in the film’s lands, air and destruction was mostly caused by man. And people, places, and animals were unfortunately around as the events in the movies were taking place. With the visuals it makes you fully see what’s going on and how each situation gotten worse. Even though some of the movies and situations actually have more happier and peaceful endings. But they also teach that not everything in life doesn’t. Have that been the same case with the “grave of the fireflies” and that story was about WW2 and throughout history what we learned.
And what happened during the course of the movies. The two siblings didn’t get a chance to see or reach a happy ending. Even in the real life scenario people during that time really didn’t get a chance like that either. Which again makes you really dive and understand the concepts behind everything we do and learn in the world.
So Hayao Miyazaki animations definitely holds up to the test of time, as it really will make you think and wonder with each passing time as we get older. And I love to revisit and rewatch “Princess Mononoke” and “Kiki’s Delivery Service” to either sit quietly with happy memories of the two. Or just to sit back and rewatch with a different perspective each time.
Continuing to grow up and wonder about the world, they’re always more fascinating things to learn and discover. Even with the oddball perspective, horror is always an interesting trope as well. Or anything in the category of thriller and psychological. Looking at both japanese creators/writers junji ito’s is already interesting because I watched a video of him and it was something involving wearing cat ears and something else. But it’s the fact that his personality was both lively and happy. Because he was having so much going on inside the video and with that you’ll just ponder “How can anyone like that. Create something so horrifying?” and the beauty of being an oddball.

You can easily deceive someone because, will just assume and try to put you in a label that they created in their mind and think everything you say or do is all in the same category. And that’s the lovely thing about that as well because you know the old saying “when you assume you make an ass out of you and me!” Even though some people actually actually have personas in their work and personality. Which is the beauty of never judging a book by its cover. Like in the 1964 originality of both The Munsters and The Addams Family they always had a smile on their face. Even while enjoying the beautiful color of black. Even though they were different, bizarre, eccentric, spooky, embracing the dark side of the macabre. But they did it with smiles, grace and sheer pride, elegance and above all full on grace as they never let what people saw them as. Made them think differently of themselves. Especially with the lovely cartoon that also fits this side as well is “Ruby Gloom” the adorable red headed little girl that always had a smile on her face and laughter in her heart as she always enjoyed making voodoo cookies and enjoys sewing in cute little patterns of spiderwebs into her clothes. And the lyrics of the show fits the theme of it so well. “Take a time to show ya the bright side of the dark side.” “There’s more than meets the eye on the bright side of the dark side” and being an oddball really does mean there really is something on the other side that people tend to ignore or brush to the side because it doesn’t fit in the normal category.
And looking into the same category will be Cassandra Peterson aka “Elvira mistress of the dark” as she was a funny eccentric character that made her persona known for her sex appeal. But also adding more to her, adding humor with horror. She definitely enjoys being the queen of camp horror. Mocking bad horror movies while becoming a pop culture icon herself. And adding two lovely things together. Being gothic has a funny eccentric tone that not everything is only one way.
Which adding another beloved oddball to the list as well as he is the last great horror host keeping the tradition still alive is svengoolie. He enjoys mixing campy horror, classic horror, and oddball charm the same as elvira, the addams family, and the munsters. Being the icon that embraces the bizarre and makes it entertaining. Being the icon of cult classic television, keeping classic monster alive with his signature wit. Having complete joy in his cheesy skits, B-movie humor and sarcastic commentary. Also proving that being weird can lead to a long-lasting legacy which has him in the same category as every beloved person on this list.
And looking back on childhood nostalgia and between the 80’s, 90’s and early 00’s they were shows that got a chance to pave the way and become beloved icons and did shape us as we are today. Or just enjoy the bizarre humor. And be it from me i enjoy any category of humor…well as well it’s funny. Even though dark humor is up there but that’s mostly thanks to robot chicken, and aqua teen hunger force.
Many shows both knew what audience they were trying to capture and let’s be honest they succeeded. Because many shows of both sides of life either have a winning chance or a one hit wonder of their time. Even with the one hit wonders that gives it more authenticity to enjoy and appreciate what the time frame didn’t back then. Hell it also gave us the chance to enjoy things from the early 2000’s that we actually still remember and have fellow oddballs actually sit and enjoy the wonders of laughing and discussing the same things that we watch and grew up with. So being an oddball always has its drawbacks. Even when that happens there’s normally good notoriety that comes from it which fuels us to embrace who we are more and actually be proud of it.

And the lovely thing behind everything as we dive more and me as well diving more into many memories and looking back on many things i’ve read and watched. It made me understand that oddballs aren’t just people. They knew when to shake the foundations that slowly paved the road map to have people also stepping out of the box of thinking of what society has taught us. In all actuality, breaking free from all of it completely. And without them breaking away we wouldn’t have movies, and shows that we enjoy today. Especially for me I found out that if it wasn’t for the rebellion of shows growing up we wouldn’t have shows like rick and morty or bojack horseman. And looking at history of animation and influences there was chances and opportunities to be rebellious and basically didn’t give a fuck about what any think. Let’s be honest as well there was a lot of shows and movies that really didn’t give a fuck. (again robot chicken and aqua teen hunger force… when you know you know.) but it’s that phase in life that actually shows the bravery of challenging life and society as they took a gamble and introduced us to beloved icons that are a huge staple in history today because let’s be real.
If we didn’t have these pioneers making changes and shaken up the core of revolutionizing because if we didn’t have the things we had from the 80’s, 90’s, and 2000’s we wouldn’t have anything teaching us hold to hell no to being normal and we wouldn’t also gotten a chance to understand or being lucky to being kids. To understand or grasp any acknowledgement to use as inspirations later in life. Because many authors and creators actually enjoy using their inspirations from fellow oddballs to give them more notoriety. Or giving them a slow nob as they respect their work and artistry as well. Because many mangas that we love wouldn’t be created without the ones that taught us and inspired more people to dive into their own creativity potential. Even in Japanese culture they make sure they pay homage to the originals.
And always acknowledge they were the ones that inspired them. Like my favorite author even though I have a lot. But it’s Tatsuki Fujimoto and i love his works of chainsaw man, goodbye eri, and his short stories and he also admits getting his inspiration from the “Texas chainsaw massacre” and anyone knows that movie as well definitely screams outside the box as it introduce horror at a very high scared level even with practical effects. And him saying that our beloved quirky hero is from the bloody horror. Speaks volume how much that thinks out of the box. Even though denji doesn’t do the same thing as leatherface. It’s more the fact that we have a hero that’s definitely way out of the conventional idea of what a hero should be.
And that’s another thing about being an oddball creating heroes that’s way different then our basic heroes that we grew up with. Sure we have Wonder Woman, Batman, Superman, Iron man, Captain America, etc. but being able to create heroes that are very much different then just being born with powers, or trying to save the world and still remaining as law abiding citizens. Being the unconventional hero that goes against the norm of storytelling and comes up with something completely fresh and new.
Some believe in the rightful justice and hiding their identities keeping the world and everyone safe. And others just enjoy having their identities and know how to be an average person enjoying causing destruction and havoc while kicking bad guys ass. And know how to still be humble and don’t really care or seek recognition. Which is the beauty of reading mangas because they definitely offer more variety than regular comics. Even though I still enjoy comics from time to time. But reading webtoons, and mangas gives more breath of fresh air to dive into multiple genres and different ideas that don’t feel the same.
Even though some would have similarities but that’s more, on the aspects of homage. Even though let’s not go in completely on copycat. Most cases, not all. It’s definitely more on looking at the similarities and seeing that they had the same concept but different deliveries. Luckily webtoons I’ve read definitely are different from each other. Another favorite artist of mine is Carnby Kim( if you have never heard of them I highly recommend you go read Bastard! shotgun boy, sweet home. Don’t like the Netflix show. They didn’t do it correctly, stick with the webtoon. It’s better trust me.) and diving into another manga that also challenges the ideas of storytelling is Dorohedoro.(psst both the anime and manga are actually good as well trust me on that one too.) And I love how Dorohedoro embraces the weirdness of its twisted wonderland oddness. It has everything that I enjoy inside the story. It has chaos and gruesome art. But yet it’s still a strangely heartwarming masterpiece that thrives inside the bizarre where the strange is the normal. And I love that so much. Most characters in other stories even though not the ones in the list but front the non-bizarre aspects.

Dorohedoro never tries to fit in or having struggles of trying to. They embrace it and they don’t apologize for the world they live in either. Q Hayashinda’s art style rejects conventional manga aesthetics. It’s messy, gritty, and full of grotesque beauty, reflecting the chaotic nature of the story itself. Instead of being the regular bishounen characters, Dorohedoro gives beefy, monstrous-looking characters that became very loveable. For me it’s definitely caiman. I always find it funny how he says Nikaido’s name. Even when he has the high pitch worry in his voice. The story enjoys being unapologetically weird. While also mixing slice of life into the mix with comedy and horror that works brilliantly. And having every blend seamlessly well together. While still surviving in a dark world of abnormality.
And adding more similarities with that as well with Go Nagi with devilman and Devil lady along with my favorite manga vampire hunter D. because they enjoy creating abstract essence of artwork and story telling. In both devil man and devil lady you have an unconventional construct of heroes being devils as it also shows how the person. Being labeled the monster, but when things start becoming destructive and chaotic humanity starts becoming the real monster. As they try to kill or destroy the heroes as they start to blame things for the strange phenomenon of the world falling apart. So instead they blame the heroes. While the heroes still try to save humanity and salvage what’s left of the world and still remain true to themselves.
Which is the same beautiful aesthetic of Vampire Hunter D being a lone dhampir in the broken outcast of the world. It Was created by Hideyuki Kikuchi and later brought to life by Yoshitaka Amano’s beautiful artwork that is still hauntingly beautiful till this day. It’s more on the fact that everything is set in an apocalyptic landscape like Dorohedoro. Vampire hunter D world is ruled by fear and monsters. Being a dhampir walking both roads of life. Both being a vampire and human. But belonging to neither. Completely alone, a solitary wanderer, feared and admired from a distance. Even though he is the classic trope of the lone soldier taking the weight of the world on his shoulders, he doesn’t let that define him. A protector of humanity, despite their rejection. He still chooses to defend the same people that despise him, yet that doesn’t stop him from caring for people. And that’s just so many things that draws me in with things like this. Because it shows that either let the world turn you into a monster or still show that regardless of anything you still know how to be more human than humanity itself. Which is sad that vampire hunter D is the underdog of being an underrated gem but it shows how well the story and it’s beautiful artistry just work so well.
And I love going to any bookstore, comic store, even anime conventions just to find sets of my beloved favorite reads. And yes I really do. Most of my mangas’ I have are from anime conventions. Either being pure blind luck or taking my sweet time and scan every shelf thoroughly. And yes I really do. My friends look at me with concern as I struggle to carrying heavy pounds books. well more on the plus side wonderful exercises. Down side sore hands and realizing having an addiction to books but also coming to realize that most people have a shoe collection. I just have a manga collection that I’d rather have. Even though my pockets cry from time to time. But I rather immerse myself with books than with anything else. And I’m not ashamed to admit it. Because one day life will never be the same with no movies or television. But books will always be around. And I enjoy having both parts of life being a moody nerd that enjoys being her crazy bizarre self. And enjoy the things that make me laugh and feel more happy and content with life.
Now with all that being said being an oddball really does have different ends of both sides of life. Being an oddball is a paradox, because it’s a strength and a curse. You walk a path few dare to thread, often misunderstood, cast aside, or even feared for simply being different. Society tends to reject what it can’t control or try to ostracize it. Because society can’t be able to put said things into a category and it annoys the normal spectrum of life. But the fun side of being on the eccentric spectrum is learning not to care or think about what society has to say anymore and if our beloved icons changed the rules. And ignored the world and still stood tall and proud of who they are. Then let’s follow their footsteps and do the same thing. Yet, history proves time and time again that the oddballs whether in reality or fiction and that still didn’t stop them .
Standing a part of normal tradition often comes at a great personal cost. But it also means living authentically, refusing to conform, and leaving behind a legacy that challenges the norms. Some oddballs are only celebrated after their time has passed, but their impact is definitely eternal. They remind us that it’s okay to be different, that the world needs those who see things from different perspectives. Whether in pop culture, art or real life. The oddballs are the quiet revolutionaries, the catalysts of change, the beautiful enigmas that refuse to be forgotten.
So, to those who feel like an outsider, who have been mocked, underestimated, or cast aside…take it from me and go ahead and embrace it fully. And wear it like a fucking badge. Because the world may not always understand you, but that’s okay. The world may never fully understand or embrace you but always make sure that they will never forget you. As you show them who you really are, it’s going to make them realize that they never had a chance to rise against you. As you’ll always stand tall and embrace who you are fully.
If there was anything I missed and I should go more in-depth more or to hear your own thoughts and opinions feel free to leave a comment and don’t be afraid to drop any ideas or concepts of the next topic I should do. open for suggestions. thank you so must and have a blessed day. and enjoy learning new things with one enigma at a time.
